Secondary Condition Claim · VASRD 6100
A condition caused or aggravated by an already service-connected disability can be granted its own service connection as a secondary condition under 38 CFR § 3.310. Here's how that works for Sensorineural Hearing Loss when it develops after Chronic Otitis Media.
Damage to ear structures
Primary condition · VASRD 6205
Chronic Otitis Media
This code rates chronic middle-ear inflammation based specifically on whether there's active suppuration (drainage) at the time of evaluation - a simpler, two-tier rating than the related code that also requires documented hearing loss. If your ear condition doesn't include measurable hearing impairment, this may be the more applicable code.
Secondary condition · VASRD 6100
Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Hearing loss caused by damage to the inner ear or auditory nerve, making it hard to hear clearly or distinguish words.
The VA rates Sensorineural Hearing Loss the same way whether it's claimed directly or as secondary to Chronic Otitis Media — severity of Sensorineural Hearing Loss itself determines the percentage.
| Rating | Criteria |
|---|---|
| 100% | Severe hearing loss in both ears, barely able to understand speech even with hearing aids. |
| 50% | Struggles to understand normal speech even with amplification. |
| 10% | Mild to moderate hearing loss, has trouble understanding in noisy places. |
| 0% | Hearing is slightly reduced but not enough to receive benefits. |
Example combined rating
10% Chronic Otitis Media + 10% Sensorineural Hearing Loss = 19%
The VA combines ratings with Table I of 38 CFR 4.25, not simple addition — 10% and 10% combine to 19%, not 20%. These figures are illustrative; your actual rating for each condition depends on your own evaluation.
