Common questions
- Why don't VA ratings just add together?
- The VA uses a 'whole person' or 'efficiency' formula in 38 CFR 4.25. Each rating reduces only the unrated portion of the body, not the total. Two 50% ratings combine to 75%, not 100%, because the second 50% only applies to the remaining 50% of unrated body.
- Does the order I enter my conditions matter?
- No. The calculator always sorts ratings from highest to lowest before applying the formula, so the math is identical regardless of input order.
- What if my combined rating is 95% or higher?
- The VA converts a final Table I value of 95–99% to 100% for compensation purposes. That nearest-10 conversion happens only after all disabilities are combined.
- Is this calculator the same as the VA's?
- Yes, we apply the Table I sequence and final conversion described in 38 CFR 4.25. Results are an estimate; the official rating decision is made by a VA rater based on your full medical evidence and exam results.
