Common questions about VA pay

When did the 2026 VA disability rates take effect?
The 2026 rates took effect on December 1, 2025 as part of the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). Veterans received the new rates starting with the January payment.
Do VA disability payments count as income?
VA disability compensation is not taxable at the federal or state level and is not counted as income for most purposes (mortgages, SSI/SSDI limits, etc.).
When do dependents start adding to my payment?
Dependent additions start at the 30% rating tier. Below 30%, the VA pays the same base rate regardless of household composition.
How are children counted?
Eligible children include biological, adopted, and stepchildren under 18 — or under 23 if in school full-time. A child of any age can also count if they became permanently disabled before age 18.
