How VA disability math works (the short version)

  1. 1. Each condition gets its own rating. The VA rates each service-connected condition under the VASRD (38 CFR Part 4) on a scale of 0–100% in 10% increments.
  2. 2. Ratings don't add — they combine. Two 50% conditions don't equal 100%. The VA uses an "efficiency" formula: each new rating reduces the remaining unrated portion of the body, not the whole.
  3. 3. Round to the nearest 10%. Pay is calculated at the nearest 10% tier. 95% and above rounds up to 100%.
  4. 4. Add dependents. Starting at 30%, the VA pays more for a spouse, each child, and each dependent parent.
