How the VA Evaluates Hydronephrosis

DC 7509 has two parts. Its own rows count attacks of colic: only an occasional attack, not infected and not requiring catheter drainage, is 10 percent; frequent attacks of colic requiring catheter drainage is 20 percent; and frequent attacks of colic with infection (pyonephrosis), kidney function impaired, is 30 percent. Above that the code hands off — the schedule line reads "Severe; Rate as renal dysfunction", which is the § 4.115a table graded by glomerular filtration rate: 30 percent for GFR from 45 to 59 mL/min/1.73 m2, 60 percent for 30 to 44, 80 percent for 15 to 29, and 100 percent for GFR less than 15, or requiring regular routine dialysis, or being an eligible kidney transplant recipient — each band held for at least 3 consecutive months during the past 12 months. So the 60, 80 and 100 percent evaluations are not reached by describing worse symptoms; they are reached by GFR.
